DESCRIPTION

Marking the 50th anniversary of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, this exhibition takes the Museum’s museography as its starting point.

Italian designer Franco Albini has advised the Gulbenkian Foundation on the most current examples of good practice in museum design. Opened in 1969, the Museum strongly reflected Albini’s training in contemporary Italian design, particularly that of Carlo Scarpa.

Recreating some of the classic solutions of this period used in art exhibitions, the exhibition highlights the contrast between the suspension and fixity of the 1950s with some of the most playful and immersive solutions that Aldo van Eyck and the Smithsons had already created at the time the Museum was inaugurated.

This exhibition, in which visitors can experience these various ways of looking and living with art, is accompanied by archive photographs and drawings that reveal solutions designed for the Gulbenkian Museum. The exhibition is an associated project of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2019. It will be presented in 2020 at the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.
