DESCRIPTION

The result of a partnership between the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, this exhibition explores the interest shared by Calouste Gulbenkian and Carl Jacobsen for nineteenth-century French sculpture.

Starting from an uncommon point of view, which focuses on the poses of the sculptures, this display brings together works created by important artists, such as Rodin, Carpeaux or Dalou. The human figure, a source of inspiration for sculptors since Antiquity, is at the centre of this presentation.

Among the lent sculptures are some of the works best known by the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum’s regular visitors, like Apollo, by Jean-Antoine Houdon, normally greeting our guests at the entrance of the Founder’s Collection. Other important works, such as Wounded Cupid, by Carpeaux, or Eternal Spring, by Rodin, complement this set, which also includes lesser-known works, usually in storage, like Dalou’s Baigneuse, which is the cover of the joint catalogue that accompanies both exhibitions.
